Why Restorative Yoga? Why Now?
Daily life is incredibly stressful, especially in an urban environment. We spend a great deal of energy just trying to survive, often running on adrenaline (the “fight or flight response”) until we burn out. Now more than ever, we need a slower, deeper yoga practice that helps us regain our equilibrium and combat the stresses of modern life. Restorative yoga is one such practice that invites the body’s “relaxation response,” calms the nervous system, and quiets the mind. Restorative Yoga is a deeply relaxing, “passive” practice of Hatha Yoga in which we let go of physical, mental and emotional tension by practicing yoga poses in a fully supported environment, holding the poses for longer durations of time, and focusing on the breath. Supported by a variety of props such as bolsters, blankets, blocks, belts, sandbag weights, and other props, this practice helps us regain the equilibrium of the body/spirit, allowing deep relaxation, surrender and opening. This practice is perfect for those who have injuries, are recovering from illness, those with physical limitations, or those who simply want to relax and regain harmony and balance in their lives.

COURSE CONTENT
In this teacher training, you will learn: What is Restorative Yoga? How does it work physiologically, psycho-spiritually, and emotionally? Proper use of Props: How to set up each pose. How to spot and correct common mistakes in prop usage Restorative sequences for different effects Many original restorative postures developed by Leza Specific poses/practices for specific therapeutic needs (insomnia, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc). Pranayama for Restorative yoga How to design a Restorative yoga class around a specific theme or focus. How to incorporate other forms of yoga therapy into Restorative yoga, such as Thai Yoga Massage, Visualization, Guided Meditation, Yoga Nidra, etc.

COURSE FORMAT Classes will be part lecture, part practice, part demonstration in which students will set each other up in the poses and practice with each other, and part question and answer period/discussion.

The first chapter also defines Yoga as the ability to perceive the world differently, awaken to a wisdom and knowing, beyond illusion. The text then goes through numerous techniques for achieving this goal. The course covers Master Patanjali’s explanation of mental afflictions and their remedies, how to establish a strong practice, qualities of a good teacher, the important and practice of Love, Compassion, Joy, and Equanimity, and the direct perception of ultimate reality.

Deepen Your Yoga Practice: Pranayama, Asana and Philosophy
with Paul Dallaghan at Sun and Moon Yoga, Tokyo
Saturday and Sunday, October 22, 23, 2011
viranchyasana-a
(Paul’s First Visit to Japan–Exclusive Engagement!)

FULLY BOOKED!!!

Pranayama is a fine science and a subtle art which requires time and a dedicated practice in order to be truly understood. This weekend is a great way to begin a pranayama practice or to learn and practice refining an ongoing practice. All students will learn and practice the techniques of pranayama as well as the philosophy of pranayama as a path to meditation.
The correct method and practice of techniques such as uddiyana, agni saur and kapalabhati will also be taught. A number of preparatory practices that address the level of tension built up in the abdomen and throat/jaw region plus some of the classical pranayama techniques.

Asana: The key principles of alignment, integrity and energy will be the focus of each vinyasa asana session. From alignment we get the correct grounding and extension while integrity identifies the correct muscular support. Awareness and proper breathing added to this structure affects the energy that vinyasa can further affect.
All this informs us what bandhas, drishtis, vinyasas and ujjayi breath really are.
The principles of Asana are universal and just need to be internalized through understanding and practice. With integrity and effort possibilities open up for everyone.

Philosophy: We will have discussion sessions with Paul on both the practices and philosophy. Any questions you have are welcome. The sessions are open to all levels of students. The sessions will be progressive so it is recommended to follow the program of the weekend as much as possible.

Beginners: you will learn the basics and go home with a base practice.
More experienced: you will be given personal help for refining your practice.

Workshop Schedule

Saturday October 22 7:30am-5:00pm
(7 hours total Instruction. Two-hour lunch break)
7:30 – 9:30 am

Pranayama with mantra and meditative contemplation (2 hrs)

9:30 am – 12:00 pm Asana in detail (2.5 hrs)
The art of vinyasa lies within the sun salutes. The keys of alignment and integrity can be found in the standing asanas. This can be more deeply applied in seated asanas. We will access the intelligence of asana practice so you can begin to apply into your already chosen approach of asana.

12:30 – 2:30 pm lunch (2 hrs)

2 :30– 5:00 pm Basic Breathwork, Discussion, Q&A, Pranayama (2.5 hrs)
We will spend a little time on understanding the breath and learning how to connect with it. This will be followed by a discussion, brought to life by your questions with lively responses. Open questions on all topics, including hatha yoga, asana, pranayama, what is a spiritual practice and how does all this relate to daily life.
We will conclude the day with some of the classical techniques of pranayama. An early dinner with Paul from 5:30pm-7:00pm at a local Meguro restaurant is scheduled. All participants are welcome to please join us. Feel will be around 2,000 yen for the dinner.

paulAbout Paul Dallaghan: Paul is a senior teacher of Pranayama, Asana and the meditative art and science of Yoga. He has been a dedicated student for over a decade of both Sri O.P. Tiwari, one of the few remaining classical yogis and masters of Pranayama, and the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in ashtanga vinyasa. Both of these great teachers have personally certified Paul in these practices, a unique position as he is the only one to have received this double honor. Paul continues with Mantra practice from the yoga lineage and meditative approaches, influenced by the Thai Forest tradition. This combination of practice and study through dedication and devotion has helped him gain some understanding of practice and to apply this appropriately in Asana, Pranayama, Mantra recitation and Meditation for the different level of students he has the privilege to share the teaching with. He continues his studies in health, digestion, anatomy and physiology. One of his main gifts is to be able to relate the teachings in a very down-to-earth way for the modern seeker. He does not take life or yoga too seriously, and as a result the discussions and philosophical sessions are lively and humorous, helping to explain the meaning behind the practices and philosophy.
Paul Dallaghan grew up in Dublin, Ireland and completed formal university studies at Trinity College. He lived in New York for seven years where his life in yoga practice and teaching began. From 2001 to 2007 he focused six months a year on advanced yoga studies in India and various pilgrimage spots in Tibet, Thailand and India. With his wife, Jutima, they opened Samahita Yoga Thailand and are both the happy parents of two lovely boys, Sean and Dylan. He knows firsthand about raising a family and keeping a sincere connection with practice and internal development. This practical experience and love of the subject matter he shares with joy, intelligence and humour. Please visit www.yoga-thailand.com and www.centeredyoga.com for more about Paul.

Buddhism, Tibetan Heart Yoga, Tantra, ancient Japanese and Chinese
poetry, Rumi, Kabir, haiku, love and life. They are designed to
inspire the journey toward awareness, interconnectedness and bliss.

PRAISE FOR Yoga Heart: Lines on the Six Perfections by Leza Lowitz
akiko3-11
Geshe Michael Roach, author of The Diamond Cutter: “The Buddha on
Managing Your Business and Your Life” says: “The Six Perfections are
ideal guidelines for living a happy and successful life, and it is
very good to see them celebrated in a sensitive and eloquent way in
the poems by Leza Lowitz from her Yoga Heart: Lines on the Six
Perfections. Most important, it is obvious that the poet is truly
practicing the six in her own life, and her verses inspire us to
follow her example in ours. Very tender and peaceful reading.”

Founders of Yoga Aid, Clive Mayhew and Eriko Kinoshita, say: “Giving
can take so many forms―giving time, giving money, and giving thoughts.
The power of Leza’s poems is centered around giving thoughts for
everything we have been given in our lives. Take the time to read her
words, absorbing the beauty and love for all that we are given.”
yohmei
Tracey Rich of the White Lotus Yoga Foundation says: “Poetry, like
yoga, is food for our soul. What a gracious feast Leza has prepared
for us. She guides us inward with her beautiful, poetic meditations
and inspires us to move outward with her artful expressions of love.
It is an honor to hear her thoughts and speak her words. I will
treasure sharing these poems with my students.”

MC Yogi says: “Leza’s poems are pure gems of wisdom that will wake you
up, inspire you, challenge you, move you, and call you to action to
live your yoga more fully. Yoga Heart rocks the heart of yoga, which
is the desire to live not just to better ourselves, but to help better
the world.”

Integration Yoga Workshop - the science of the nadis, bandhas and chakras with Miles Maeda

Saturday, September 10, 2011
18:00-20:30
Cost ¥3,500
miles.jpg
Yoga for many begins with the practice of asana, synchronizing the movements of the body with the flow of the breath. The definition of Yoga, according to Patanjali, is the cessation of the waves of the mind. So in order to bridge the one with the other, it is vital to integrate the dynamics of our subtle anatomy: the nadis (channels), bandhas (locks) and chakras (energy centers).
Hatha Yoga is the merging of opposites, the union of the male and female energies within us. This unification happens in the subtle anatomy, which is supported by our physical structure and activity. If one practices any of the Hatha Yogas (Ashtanga, Iyengar, Anusara, Bikram, etc.), the opportunity to evolve one’s practice is to cultivate the subtle energies within. We open and clear the channels, utilize the bandhas to guide and direct energy to flow freely up and through the various chakras, ultimately resulting in the stilling of the waves of the mind.
In this workshop, we will explore exercises to gain awareness of our subtle anatomy. We will do pranayama to strengthen the bandhas as well as learn a powerful mantra to clear and energize the chakras. Finally, we will do a yoga set designed to integrate subtle awareness with a physical asana practice. The practice of yoga opens many doors. And if it’s time to go deeper, the tools to help you do the work are right there inside of us.
Workshop in English with Japanese translation by Tomoko Kawahara.

If your Downward Dog is unhappy, your Warrior 1 is losing its battle,
the Chair Pose just isn’t comfy or you dread Chaturanga, then this is the
workshop for you.

Surynamaskara: Surya = sun Namaskara = greeting or salutation

This is a flow that offers us so much and honors the giver of light. Yet, are we mindfully aware of what we are doing? Or ,are we rushing through the asanas to reach the more “challenging” aspects of the practice? In this workshop, surynamaskaras A and B will be broken down in detail to explore how the breath is working and what the body is doing.

Through the use of props, partner work and visualization, this session will be the dawn of a new era for your sun salutations! If you have fallen into some bad habits, let’s change them and form good new ones instead.

If you are new to yoga, you will be introduced to the foundations of an asana practice while being offered modifications to help you ease into the sequence. For those with an established practice, you will be challenged to re-energize the flow. Teachers can learn effective techniques for breaking down the elements of the sun salutations and teaching proper form, alignment, and how to inspire. Prepare to sweat and SHINE.

All Levels: For Beginners to Advanced Practitioners to Teachers

The workshop will be in English with Japanese translation by Tomoko Kawahara.

FULLY BOOKED!!!

How do you place your hands on the ground, lift the pelvis and gracefully float back? Is it possible to land safely on your jump-thru? And how do you engage the bandhas and what are they?

Through the connection of the bandhas, this 3 hour workshop will inspire and unlock secrets to the mysteries of a familiar ‘jump-back and jump-through’ while leaving you uplifted. You will learn how partner work, props and the use of blankets will prepare you for a safe take-off and landing on your personal runway, your yoga mat.

Liberate yourself from old patterns. Don’t crash, soar and fly!

Open to all levels of practitioner.

About the Instructor: Em Bettinger loves movement and the mechanics of  it, and started dancing from an early age, going on to study contemporary dance at 18. Through her dance studies she was introduced to yoga. Em sees yoga as a “dance on the mat” - the breath guiding you and energy radiating from within. She believes you need to be in the movement physically, mentally and emotionally - then as a person you grow, as does your practice. Em teaches Ashtanga Yoga, Yin/Yang Yoga and Vinyasa Flow at Sun and Moon.

Fire up Your Teaching: Skills for Yoga Teachers
A Hands-on Adjustment & Philosophy Workshop with Leza Lowitz

adjust1

Session 1: Saturday July 9, 5:00-8:00pm
Session 2: Sunday July 10, 6:30-8:30pm

Do you want to fire up your yoga teaching and attract more students to your classes? Do you want to connect more deeply to your students? Giving adjustments is one way to do this. Learning and practicing ancient inner techniques of how to be a powerful teacher is another.

Touch is a powerful thing, and a good yoga adjustment is a key way for a teacher to aid students in going much deeper into a their practice than they could do on their own. A good adjustment will build trust for the teacher and for the practice as a whole. A good in-class adjustment and the personal attention it provides brings a greater level of awareness, safety, and opening of the physical and subtle body.
adjust2
Adjustments are a powerful way to deepen both the outer and inner practice of yoga.
In this in-depth workshop we will look at the “full adjustment”– from observation to touch. Students will not only learn important adjustments for any class, but also the principles behind offering a powerful, professional adjustment in any pose. Powerful inner method tips from Master Asanga’s ancient text “The Jewel of the Sutras” on how to go from a good teacher to being a great teacher will also be shared.

Topics covered in this Workshop:
*Observation/Intention
*Types of adjustments
*How to see and adjust the subtle body
*Types of touch
*Addressing individual needs
*Ensuring the student gains wisdom through the adjustment
*Alignment principles
*Multiple adjustments for all types of asanas from Tadasana to Savasana
*Best practices for adjusting and teaching in general

Food for Health & Healing Workshop with Miles Maeda

you-are-what-you-eat-2

June 4, 2011 5:00-8:00pm

You are what you eat. It’s true. Every time you eat, you create your future self. Our food provides the building blocks for our health, literally becoming the assemblage of components which make up the entire body from the brain to our bones. In time each cell of the body is rebuilt by the nutrients in what we eat and helps determine our body’s overall health and vitality, mood and demeanor, as well as mental attitude and experience of life.

Learning how to eat for our health is not often taught by our parents nor by our educational systems, and the old cultural and indigenous traditions that make sacred this knowledge have been sidelined by the convenience of technology and industry. Most information made readily available are from advertisements and media, government agencies and institutions, as well as large corporations. Food becomes fuel for the body, pleasure for our taste buds, and comfort for our emotions.

We will explore methods old and new for using specific foods for cleaning out toxins and waste, maintaining energy, cellular health and optimal weight, and discovering the benefits of nutrient rich food.

We will look at:
1. the objectives for a healthy body and mind through food
2. 10 yogic ideas about digestion and elimination
3. how to have optimal energy and weight through alkaline and nutrient rich foods
4. supplementing a diet with bodywork, exercise and fasting
5. a plan with recipes for a 1 to 3 month program

Our relationship to food is vital, and our lives depend on it!

Workshop in English with Japanese translation by Minako Suzuki.

Workshop cost: 4,000 yen or 2 checks on a Regular class card, 4 checks on Unlimited card.

Dealing With Trauma–Workshop With Misa Tsuruta

Surviving earthquakes and other perils (in English) with Misa Tsuruta

Date: Saturday, May 14 6:30 pm - 8:30pm (NOTE NEW TIME!)
Location: Sun and Moon Yoga, Meguro

Following the workshop in April, we are going to have one for the second time in May in two workshops, one in English and one in Japanese. This time we are going to go deeper into one or more of the topics covered last time: pre-, peri-, post-traumatic, period, disconnections and reconnections, grief work, processing emotions, coping mechanisms. While talking about these themes, we would like to make it a safe place where all participants are able to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The topics may also include survivor’s guilt and secondary (vicarious) traumatization. The purpose of this workshop is not to offer healing/therapy but to provide participants with some framework to think about their experiences. This group is also open to first-timers.

The restoration of the affected areas is ongoing and will take much more time and resources. Therefore, we plan to hold this workshop every month until about September at various locations, around the beginning of each month.

If you plan to attend, please RSVP at danscope04@yahoo.com. If you
RSVP on the day (May 7 or May 14), please make a call at 080-2065-4357.

“Kirtan”, which literally means ‘to repeat’ in Sanskrit, is a
call-and-response style of chanting that anyone can enjoy. Some
people may wonder what singing has to do with yoga. But actually,
kirtan is a yoga practice we do off the mat which is also called as
“Bhakti Yoga”; yoga of devotion. It’s a spiritual practice of
fostering loving devotion (bhakti) to our own personal form of God.
Some may refer to God as our own divinity- the inner sacredness within
in each of us.

You are welcome to bring along a musical instrument if you have one.
Please let Tomoko know in advance if you do decide to bring one.
Thanks to everyone who joined our past gatherings, the money we raised
for YCIP has reached 203,000 yen in total. Many thanks for your kind

Yoga & Numerology: The Science of Yoga meets The Science of Numbers
with Miles Maeda

April 9, 2011 5:00-8:00pm
numerology

In this workshop, we will tap into the insightful use of numerology (using our date of birth) as a way to determine where we have challenges and weaknesses as well as gifts and strengths in our lives. With this knowledge, we can see a clear and useful picture of ourselves and know very practically how we can grow. We can then use specific yoga exercises to become well-rounded, balanced, harmonious in relationships, connected to our spiritual self, and feeling satisfied and fulfilled on our life’s path.

We will spend time going over the formula which gives each person their numerology chart, including the 3 areas of challenge and the 2 areas of strength. This relates to 10 bodies we have: our physical body, the 4 subtle inner bodies and the 5 outer ‘light’ bodies. When we have this view of ourselves, we can approach our obstacles with clarity and confidence and utilize our gifts to their utmost potential.

We will then practice a yoga set to energize and strengthen these 10 bodies, as well as work with a powerful mantra to help us master all parts of ourselves. This knowledge can be taken with you so you can have fun doing numerology charts for your friends and family, which will also shed light on yourself and your practice. If you would like to go more in depth and are interested in a personal reading, you can receive one via email for an additional fee.

Charity Workshop: Surviving an Earthquake and Other Traumas
How to cope with traumatic stress with Misa Tsuruta

Saturday, April 2, 5:00pm-7:00pm by Donation.
All donations go to earthquake relief through Japan Red Cross

The earthquake and other accompanying disasters on March 11 and after were totally unexpected and beyond imagination. These extraordinary events, including natural disasters and personal victimization among others, are called trauma (or traumatic events). There are differences between being passively victimized and knowing something about how to deal with trauma, even though knowing everything is virtually impossible. In this charity workshop we are going to discuss basic issues of coping with trauma: three phases of trauma, emotional numbing and dissociation, disconnection and reconnection, and coping/stress management.

About the facilitator: Misa Tsuruta, MA, holds master’s in psychology from New York University and The New School. After studying clinical psychology and gaining clinical training, she is enrolled in PhD program in Cognitive, Social and Developmental Psychology at The New School for Social Research. Currently in Tokyo she works with children and adults as a counselor and offers workshops and lectures.

To register, hit Contact and send in a request with your name, phone number, and the dates and title of which course(s) you would like to attend. Or if you can’t, there is no need to register for this workshop. Just come to the studio on the day of the workshop.

Why do we take a teacher, or guru? How does this practice help us grow and evolve? In this workshop, Chops will share some of the traditions of the Guru Principle, drawing from his personal experience in 2010 in which following the Guru path brought him from one of his darkest hours into light. Workshop will contain pranayama, vinyasa flow asana and Zen meditation.

“Kirtan”, which literally means ‘to repeat’ in Sanskrit, is a call-and-response style of chanting that anyone can enjoy. Some people may wonder what singing has to do with yoga. But actually, kirtan is a yoga practice we do off the mat which is also called as “Bhakti Yoga”; yoga of devotion. It’s a spiritual practice of fostering loving devotion (bhakti) to our own personal form of God. Some may refer to God as our own divinity- the inner sacredness within in each of us.

You are welcome to bring along a musical instrument if you have one. Please let Tomoko know in advance if you do decide to bring one.

Do you feel guilty having plenty? How do you approach giving and receiving?

Do you love what you do?

Does something always seem to stop you from pursuing your dreams?

Money and abundance, like everything else in the universe, are forms of energy. They have certain spiritual laws of flow. What is your attitude towards money and abundance? Where did it come from? Do you give yourself permission to have abundance?

*This workshop is not just about financial flow, but opening up ALL CHANNELS OF FLOW in the universe and manifesting your highest potential to help you serve others.

This workshop will help you understand and transform your relationship to money and flow, ultimately helping you find your life’s work and realize your natural state of abundance and generosity.

abundance
In this workshop, we will use:

・ guided meditations

・ journaling

・ manifesting techniques

・ partner work

・ magnetizing techniques and more…

All to help you understand and transform your beliefs about money and abundance, listen to your intuition, and draw opportunity and possibility to you in ways that support you and the universe.

Writer Bonnie Lee La Madeleine attended a prior workshop on Creating Abundance. She said, “The workshop did more to help me see how I hinder my own efforts than anything else. The experience has helped me focus my writing skills and develop a plan to become a full-time self-employed writer. I now have one book in negotiation, and one proposal being seriously considered.”

A participant in a past “Creating Abundance” workshop said:

“I can’t thank you enough for all you taught and offered today. I have not felt this clear about my purpose in life before. So much in today’s workshop spoke to me,

and I now have the faith and trust in myself to go forward and put it all into action!!!”

If you have been looking for a way to expand your horizons and potential, this special workshop is for you.

To register hit Contact and send in a request with ABUNDANCE WS in the subject line. Register early to ensure a spot!

FIRE PUJA 1/29/11 with Leza Lowitz 6:30pm-8:00pm

fire

Enter the new year with a clean slate. Purify past deeds that you are not proud of. We will look at how our past deeds are affecting our lives now. Then, we’ll learn a purification practice we can do everyday life as a meditation. We will also investigate the use a fire puja to purify and learn how to do this easily in our own homes without burning
them down. This is a great thing to do before the Abundance Workshop on 2.11, if you are planning to attend that. Bilingual with translation.

Cost: 3,000 yen donation to YCIP
