YIN YOGA Teacher Training Course
30-Hour Yin Yoga Teacher Training Course with PAUL GRILLEY
December 22-27, 2007
Yin Yoga is the relaxed practice of floor postures held for three to five minutes at a time. It is the ideal complement to more muscular or “Yang” forms of Yoga. A Yin practice emphasizes the connective tissues of the hips, thighs, pelvis and lower spine. In this way it prepares the body and the mind for longer meditation practices. By drawing the student’s awareness away from the muscles and deeper into the bones a deep level of relaxed focus is achieved. This course will train students in the practice of Yin Yoga and in the anatomical principles of modern yoga practice. This gives a solid, scientific foundation for teaching and practicing. It will be Paul Grilley’s first time to Japan, and the first time a comprehensive Yin Yoga Teacher Training Course will be offered in Japan.
About the Instructor: Paul Grilley has been teaching Yoga since 1980, and his special interest is the teaching of Anatomy and Yin Yoga. He is the author of the book Yin Yoga: A Quiet Practice, and the DVDs Yin Yoga, Anatomy for Yoga, which is becoming standard in teacher training programs across the country, and Chakra Theory and Meditation (all from Pranamaya). He practices Yoga postures in the style of Paulie Zink and patterns his philosophy on the writings and researches of Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama. This philosophy integrates the Taoist Meridian and Acupuncture theories of China with the Yogic and Tantric theories of India. Paul lives in Ashland, Oregon with his wife Suzee, a dancer and yogini. De-Mystifying Arm Balances & Other Adventures:
Advancing Your Practice with Lauren Peterson
Sunday November 25, 5:00-8:00pm
and Tuesday November 27, 2:30-5:30pm
(The content of both days is the same.)
This workshop is designed for those interested in trying and exploring more intermediate and advanced postures in a safe and incremental way. We will work with bandhas (energy locks) and apply them to help us to “lighten the load” in arm balances and inversions such as handstand (adho mukha vrksasana), headstand (sirsasana), and forearm balance (pincha mayurasana). In the area of the hips and sacrum, we will explore the relationship between the hip socket, the psoas and the sacrum in postures such as foot-behind-the-head (eka pada sirsasana) and deep backbends to help you explore and deepen into those poses safely.
We will also explore how to use some basic postures to begin to prepare the body for deeper and more challenging poses. If you wish to advance your practice and try poses that you thought were “too difficult” or “impossible,” then this workshop is a great way to safely deconstruct, de-mystify, and have fun working in these poses. You don’t have to be able to do these postures perfectly already to attend the workshop. Come explore and play!
This workshop is appropriate for Level 3-5. If you are not sure if it is appropriate for you, please check with Leza or your teacher.
About the Instructor: Lauren Peterson is a nationally recognized yoga practitioner, yoga model, and teacher living in Malibu, Calif. She is one of the few advanced (Fourth Series) Ashtanga yoga practitioners in the U.S. Lauren had the privilege of studying with and assisting Chuck Miller for over 10 years. Meditation & Self- Inquiry: The Art of Knowing Who You Are
A two-part MORNING workshop with Esalen’s OLIVER BAILEY
Saturday September 8th 7:30-9:30am &
Sunday September 9th 7:30-9:30am
This workshop will introduce you to highly effective meditation and self-inquiry techniques that invite you to explore who you are before your stories, beliefs, feelings and thoughts.
Come and take a look at who you are in this special workshop with Esalen’s Oliver Bailey,
who has spent over a quarter of a century teaching meditation.
Workshop Content:
Lecture on Meditation
Meditation (Instruction)
Self-Inquiry (Instruction)
Question and Answer Period/Discussion
The journey starts with identifying our own personal stories–the ones we use to define ourselves, the stories we tell over and over again to ourselves and others. On the surface, these stories may be who we believe weare, but in reality, these stories become our false personality if they go unquestioned.A highly effective aid in our journey to the true Self is meditation. With meditation, we begin to get in touch with the spacious, still, quiet place where the stories, beliefs, feelings and thoughts emerge from. Our minds are often so busy that we lose sight of the ground from which they emerge. Oliver has developed meditative exercises that aid in connecting to this interior place. He will share these exercises in this special workshop.
The most important tool of spiritual awakening is to discover who we are. To this end, Oliver will also introduce us to powerful tools of Self-Inquiry. By questioning and inquiring into our identities, we begin identify with our true Self beyond our ego and personality. Self-inquiry is a spiritually powerful questioning that always points us back to ourselves.
Session Two will build on the techniques explored in Session One.
About the Instructor: Oliver Bailey has been teaching Meditation, Self-Inquiry, Massage and Personal Process at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, for the past 25 years. His background also includes training in Gestalt Practice, neurolinguistic programming, and intuitive work. He has led hundreds of meditation workshops and seminars around the world and is a sought-after workshop leader.
Cost: 4,000 yen each session or 7,000yen for both. Please send name and phone BY EMAIL with “MEDITATION WORKSHOP” in the title. Please specify which workshop (or both) you want to take. Please apply by August 15th to secure a spot.
Workshop is in English w/some Japanese interpretation.

Release, Suspend and Fall: Contemporary Dance Workshops for Beginners
with Em Bettinger
Saturday April 21 and Sunday April 22, 2007 5:30-7:30pm
Contemporary dance (sometimes referred to as “Modern Dance”) is a collection of techniques and systems developed in the twentieth century. Notable contemporary artists are Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Merce Cunningham, and Jose Limon. The techniques developed by these choreographers have allowed dancers to strengthen their bodies, increase flexibility, and push beyond ’safe’ boundaries as a reaction to the rigid techniques of ballet. These two workshops will allow you to ‘play’ and enjoy movement, while moving through a series of exercises that isolate and warm up the body and allow us to explore the bodies’ full range of motion. We’ll work through floor exercises, jumps and traveling sequences, leading to a short sequence at the end, putting it all together. We’ll learn how the words “release, suspend and fall” relate to dance when moving to the sounds of Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash, Dick Dale and The Who. Tutus, legwarmers & hair in bun, and pointe shoes not required. Come bare-footed in loose clothing and get ready to smile, laugh and perform.About the Instructor: Em Bettinger started dancing when she was five, attending the local ballet school. She later went on to practice gymnastics. At the age of eighteen, she went to study dance at the Laban Centre for Movement and Dance in London and then moved on to Middlesex University and gained a B.A. with Honors in Dance Performance.
Em has performed with and choreographed for many independent contemporary dance companies around London while teaching able and disabled children and adults. She hopes to increase appreciation for and interest in contemporary dance in Japan.
Cost: 4,000 yen each session or 7,000yen for both.
Please send name and phone by EMAIL with “DANCE WORKSHOP” in the title. Please specify which workshop (or both) you want to take.

YIN YOGA: Awakening from Within with Leza Lowitz
Most forms of Yang yoga (like Ashtanga, Vinyasa Flow) focus on the
muscles, but Yin yoga is a slower, deeper practice of holding the
postures for long periods of time to stretch the connective tissues that
form our joints. Just as our muscles atrophy when we don’t use them, our
connective tissue shortens and hardens. This class will focus on deep stretches,
particularly hip-opening postures, using the breath to explore body sensations and invite
deeper emotional and physical release, and softening in the “living tissue” of the joints. Come Surrender to Slow Yin Yoga and awaken your body from within and learn more about this increasingly popular style of yoga popularized by Paul Grilley, based on Hiroshi Motoyama’s meridian theory. Learn about each pose and how it functions to stimulate certain meridians and internal organs. Some yoga experience recommended, but modifications will be given so this workshop is suitable for all levels.
This workshop was first presented by Leza and ACO at Yoga Fest 2006 in Tokyo to a sold-out class of over 70! Also includes lecture and Q and A.
Japanese Interpretation by ACO. Where: Sun and Moon Yoga
Cost: 4,500 yen Limit: 18 people

SOAR AND FLY: ACROYOGA WORKSHOPS WITH JENNY AND JASON
AcroYoga blends the spiritual wisdom of yoga, the lovingkindness of Thai massage, and the dynamic power of Acrobatics. These three ancient lineages form the foundation of a unique new practice that cultivates trust, connection and playfulness. Jenny and Jason’s highest aim is to bring individuals into a state of union with themselves, with each other, and with the divine. From this place of mutual support the true self can be realized, honored and shared for the benefit of all. Through AcroYoga, we experience a deepening trust in ourselves and others, and we realize that by working in partnership, we manifest more than we ever could alone. Join us at Sun and Moon for these two special workshops to experience the magic and beauty of AcroYoga.
Saturday February 17th 6-9pm:
ACROYOGA PARTNER BASICS
Open your practice with the ease, comfort and the support of a partner. This workshop touches upon all the disciplines that AcroYoga offers, combining Yoga, Acrobatics, and Thai Massage. The class experience includes: Circle Ceremony, Mirrored Asana, Partner Yoga Flow, Assisted Inversions, Partner Acrobatics, Flying Sequences and Thai Massage. Grounded in the breath, we will draw upon the natural forces of gravity and “metta” loving kindness to encourage the body to let go of fear and tension. Students are requested to have familiarity with yoga. No partner necessary!
Limit: 16 people. Cost: 6,000 yen per session.
Sunday, February 18th 6-9pm: INVERSIONS DEMYSTIFIED
Explore Upside-Down Fundamentals & Basic Partner Acrobatics. The Mystery of inversions is no match for the wisdom of acrobatic training techniques! The ancient yoga texts tell us that Headstand and Shoulderstand are the King and Queen of Asanas, mainly due to the vast medical benefits. These and other inversions, such as handstand and forearm-stand, can be an enjoyable part of your daily practice once you learn how to work progressively. After solidifying spotting techniques, we will progress to Basic Partner Acrobatics and Pyramids, cultivating trust, strength and flexibility while working as a team. A playful, safe, supportive environment will empower the whole room to be upside down and connect to the divine! Some yoga experience recommended, but no inversion experience needed.
Limit: 16 people.
Cost: 6,000 yen per session
TAKE BOTH WORKSHOPS FOR 10,000 yen!

RESTORATIVE YOGA TEACHER TRAINING COURSE
with Leza Lowitz
TWO 20-hour Teacher Trainings
Four Sundays in January & February, 2007 50,000 yen
Section One: January 7, 14, 21, 28
Section Two: February 2/3 -2/11
Why Restorative Yoga? Why Now?
Daily life is incredibly stressful, especially in an urban environment. We spend a great deal of energy just trying to survive, often running on adrenaline (the “fight or flight response”) until we burn out. Now more than ever, we need a slower, deeper yoga practice that helps us regain our equilibrium and combat the stresses of modern life. Restorative yoga is one such practice that invites the body’s “relaxation response,” calms the nervous system, and quiets the mind. Restorative Yoga is a deeply relaxing, “passive” practice of Hatha Yoga in which we let go of physical, mental and emotional tension by practicing yoga poses in a fully supported environment, holding the poses for longer durations of time, and focusing on the breath. Supported by a variety of props such as bolsters, blankets, blocks, belts, sandbag weights, and other props, this practice helps us regain the equilibrium of the body/spirit, allowing deep relaxation, surrender and opening. This practice is perfect for those who have injuries, are recovering from illness, those with physical limitations, or those who simply want to relax and regain harmony and balance in their lives.
COURSE CONTENT:
In this teacher training, you will learn:
What is Restorative Yoga?
How does it work physiologically, psycho-spiritually, and emotionally?
Proper use of Props: How to set up each pose.
How to spot and correct common mistakes in prop usage
Restorative sequences for different effects
Many original restorative postures developed by Leza
Specific practices for specific therapeutic needs (insomnia, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc.)
Pranayama for Restorative yoga
How to design a Restorative yoga class around a specific theme or focus.

COURSE FORMAT
Classes will be part lecture, part practice, part demonstration in which students will set each other up in the poses and practice with each other, and part question and answer period/discussion.Class will be in English with Japanese interpretation. What to Bring:
